Vanilla Fudge had a well developed formula of covering a variety of hit songs in a slowed down, psychedelicized manner; their debut album, Vanilla Fudge (1967) included the Supremes hit “You Keep Me Hanging On”, which is what got them signed in the first place to the Atlantic Records affiliate, Atco Records. (April 2014) * * * Felix Pappalardi, who produced Cream’s second through fourth albums and became almost a fourth member of the band, is actually from New York. A classically trained musician, Pappalardi had previously worked with a Long Island garage rock band called the Vagrants and had them signed to Atco Records. Their third single in 1967, “Respect” became a hit on the East Coast, until Aretha Franklin released her version of the song, and that was the end of that.
