SAN DIEGO READER

The San Diego Reader  is the largest alternative press paper in the county of San Diego, distributed free in stands and private businesses throughout the county, funded by advertisements.  Averaging 90,000 copies per issue, it reportedly has one of the largest circulations of any alternative weekly publication in the nation.  Noted for its literary style of journalism and coverage of the arts, particularly film and theater, the Reader is recognized as a pioneer among alternative weeklies for both its creative nonfiction and its commercial scheme, using ad revenue (particularly from classifieds and entertainment promotions) to establish the practice of widespread free circulation, a cornerstone of today’s alternative papers.  Published weekly since October 1972, the Reader is known as a showcase for San Diego writers and photographers.  (More from Wikipedia)

An overview of the Loons was published in the San Diego Reader in 2015 upon the release of Inside Out Your Mind; eight other articles about the band had been published previously by this alternative weekly. The article lists the “genre” for the Loons as noise/experimental and punk and describes the “full scope of their sound” as “Beatlesque vibes reincarnated in the form of post-punk fervency”. Influences are listed in the article as the Pretty Things, the Seeds, the Yardbirds, the Monks, the 13th Floor Elevators, MC5, the Misunderstood, and the Dutch band the Outsiders
