Micky Dolenz

MICKY DOLENZ

Micky Dolenz  (born March 8, 1945) is an American actor, musician, television director, radio personality and theater director, best known as the drummer and lead singer of the 1960s pop/rock music band the Monkees.   Dolenz began his show business career in 1956 when he starred in a children’s show called Circus Boy under the name Mickey Braddock.  He played an orphaned water boy for the elephants in a one-ring circus at the start of the 20th century.  (More from Wikipedia)

In 1965, the first commercial synthesizer was made available by Robert Moog; major rock bands like the Monkees (Micky Dolenz ordered one of the very first Moog Synthesizers), the Rolling Stones and the Doors were quick to incorporate synthesizers into their music.

In truth, only Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork started out as musicians; Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz were actors (in fact, I remembered previously seeing Dolenz in a TV show called Circus Boy).  However, by the time they went on tour in late 1966, all four members of the Monkees were accomplished musicians and put on as good a show as most American rock bands of that period; I saw them myself (I believe in Greensboro, NC), and I enjoyed the show – probably the first major rock concert that I attended.
