WILDWOOD WEED Â "Wildwood Weed" Â is a 1974 hit song written Don Bowman and recorded by Jim Stafford. Â The song is a story about farmers who take a sudden interest in a common wildflower on their farm, and soon discover and enjoy its hallucinogenic and mind-altering properties after one of them begins to chew on one. Â They begin to cultivate the plant in earnest; however, federal agents raid their property and destroy their crop. Â Nevertheless, the men are undeterred by the destruction of their plants as they have saved a supply of seeds which was overlooked by the agents. Â "Wildwood Weed" reached number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the Canadian pop singles chart. Â (More from Wikipedia) Â
One of the songs, "Wildwood Flower" has perhaps the loveliest melody in all of country music.  At the time, I knew the song only by reputation, and mainly because of "Wildwood Weed" (1974) – which is basically about marijuana – a #7 hit song by Jim Stafford that mentions the song:  "The name of this song is 'The Wildwood Flower' / Now 'The Wildwood Flower' is an old country classic / It gained a whole new popularity / The song isn't any more popular / But the flower is doin' real good".  The song "Wildwood Weed" was written and originally recorded way back in 1964 by country singer and comedian Don Bowman.  (February 2015)  |
