DAVE EDMUNDS ![]()
Dion DiMucci was one of the leading rock and rollers of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, and his work still sounds great to me to this day. After a long career in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and a period of Christian contemporary recordings, Dion was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and released a great comeback album called Yo Frankie in 1989. The sticker on the cover proclaims: “The man who invented the rock & roll attitude . . . has now perfected it”. Produced by Dave Edmunds, the album features numerous guest appearances: Paul Simon, Lou Reed, k.d. lang, Patty Smyth, and Bryan Adams. Reed’s speech at the induction ceremony is also included on the sleeve. (September 2012) * * * Most of the credits on unfamiliar albums are going to be unfamiliar names as well, but every now and then, you will spot a famous person. Look for the record producer for instance; depending upon your own personal tastes, if John Doe (of X) or Todd Rundgren or Dave Edmunds is involved, and you are a fan, that would increase the chances that you would like the album. (November 2012) * * * One real treat on the Pebbles, Volume 4 LP is an early number by Dave Edmunds (who lives far from California), called “London’s a Lonely Town” (“. . . when you’re the only surfer boy around” that is preceded by the line, “My woodie’s outside . . . covered with snow”). (December 2014) * * * Before releasing his monster hit album in 1971 called Bat out of Hell, Meat Loaf was in a duo called Stoney & Meatloaf that was signed by Motown the year before. Others include Crystal Mansion (a white psychedelic/R&B band that is a future UARB), Toe Fat (a British band that included two future members of Uriah Heep), Love Sculpture (a Welsh blues-rock band that was led by Dave Edmunds), and a Dutch band called the Cats.
