2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

 
 2001: A Space Odyssey  is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick.  The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was partially inspired by Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel”.  Clarke concurrently wrote the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey which was published soon after the film was released.  The film deals with a series of encounters between humans and mysterious black monoliths that are apparently affecting human evolution, and a voyage to Jupiter tracing a signal emitted by one such monolith found on the Moon.  The film is frequently described as an epic, both for its length and scope, and for its affinity with classical epics.  (More from Wikipedia)
 
 
Before you stick up your noses at mono, the early British Invasion albums were typically recorded in monaural; thus, when you got a “stereo” album, it was electronically reprocessed in some way and, these days, sounds pretty cheesy.  Even the early stereo efforts aren't the greatest in the world:  Many Beatles records run the instruments through one channel and the vocals through the other, and then call that stereo.  The first album that I can recall which was released only in stereo was the soundtrack album for the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Natasha Shneider also worked as an actress, most notably starring as the female cosmonaut Irina Yakunina in the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey called 2010 (1984).  In one touching scene, Shneider is shown in a clutch with star Roy Scheider during a particularly frightening part of the voyage to Jupiter.  She also appeared in episodes of the TV shows Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues, sometimes being credited as Natasha Detente.
